This is the second book in the “Pillars of Consciousness” series and a great introduction to Zen.

Starting with a history of Zen (“Zen was born in India, grew in China, and blossomed in Japan.”), the book covers Zen Masters like Buddha, Bodhidharma, Sosan, Rinzai, and others. Chapter titles include “Zen goes to Japan,” “Anecdotes of the Absurd,” “Zen Dialogues,” “The Mysteries of the Koan,” and “Zen in the West.”

The book is beautifully illustrated with many full-color photos and comes with a full-discourse CD from the series The Goose Is Out.
